The Roy Young Band
Mick joined The Roy Young Band in 1972, and stayed with them for two years, until 1974 when the band dissolved due to management issues. During that time, the band recorded a couple of singles, "Devil's Daughter" written by Mick, and the rock n' roll classic "Bonie Moronie" plus several other "B" sides, as well as an entire album as a follow up to Roy's previous albums, "The Roy Young Band" and "Mr Funky" that produced the hit song "Wild Country Wine", however their final album, with most of the songs written by Mick, was not released until many years later, and then only in Italy under a small label. Once again, the artists never saw a penny in royalties for their efforts. While in the studio deep in the Kent countryside, local neighbour Jeff Beck became a regular guest, stopping in and even making tea and sandwiches for the boys. During one session, Mick finally got Jeff to pick up Mick's EKO 12- string guitar, and you can hear Jeff playing it all through the song "I won't be coming back" on this page. On the song Jackie's Eyes, Mick made a trip down to the studio to overdub the guitar solo, and happened to bump into Jeff, who was laying down some demos for Beck, Bogert and Appice. Jeff obliged and Mick played Jeff's famous 'Ox blood' Gibson Les Paul on that solo, can you hear Jeff's signature tone? Roy Young Band members included: Roy Young, piano and vocals, Paul 'Jet' Simmons, bass, Nick South, bass, Nic Potter, bass, George Ford, bass, Cliff Davies, drums, Dennis Elliott, drums, Onnie McIntyre, guitar, Dave Wendells, guitar, Mick Clarke, guitar, Howie Casey, tenor sax, Ricky Dodd, tenor sax, soprano sax, Eddie 'Tan Tan' Thornton, trumpet, Dave Caswell, trumpet, and the late and very great Jon Lee, trombone.
